Model Trains

Filling the temporary exhibit case in our lobby for the month of July are model trains brought in by Larry Dilts.

Larry says:
"Why do I like trains? I do not know. Every since I can remember, I have loved them. I don't know if it was the trains I saw on the Midland Terminal Railroad as a toddler or my first wind-up train. Whatever the reason, they affected me at a very early age and has only intensified as I have grown older and learned more."

"Growing up, my brother and I had a model railroad. This worked well for us because he lined doing the scenery and I liked laying track and running trains. Through the years, I have had various model railroads, but my real love was real trains. I began photographing trains when I was in high school. Today, I have over 20,000 photos taken of trains mostly in Colorado and the surrounding area."

Although I have stopped modeling railroads, I still enjoy model trains and have collected many N-gauge,and O-gauge trains. I particularly like the N-scale trains because they are small and can be easily displayed in glass cases. I also have collected some cast5 metal trains I played with as a child."

In addition to being a collector and photographer, Larry has become a researcher, historian, and author. Some of his books are available at the Prairie Museum of Art & History gift shop. These well documented books tell the story of the Union Pacific Plainville Branch and the Rock Island Railroad. Both of these rail lines served Colby at one time.

There is no admission to visit the lobby exhibit, so stop in soon to see Larry's amazing collection.
