Our lobby exhibit of salt and pepper shakers for October is from the collection of Prairie Museum of Art & History. They were accumulated by two local collectors -- Alice Harrison and Olive Pridemore.
Salt and pepper shakers have been a collectible item for many years and remain so today. They appeal to collectors because they are readily available, affordable and don't take up much space. Shakers come in an array of colors, materials, and designs. Salt and pepper sets are also made from a wide variety of materials including metals, glass, porcelain, ceramic, plastic, and wood.
In addition to traditional salt and pepper shakers, matching salt shakers and pepper mills have become quite popular. Most pepper mills can be adjusted to determine how coarse or fine the peppercorns are ground.
